The Joan Purnell Memorial Scholarship
Purpose
In addition to honoring the memory of Joan Purnell, a Good Samaritan nurse and CRNA for 39 years, the purpose of this scholarship program is to offer financial support to Good Samaritan associates and/or community members who are interested in furthering their healthcare career in any a field of nursing, but especially nurse anesthetist. Applicants could also be interested in an LPN, RN, BSN, or MSN program of study. This scholarship is not based totally on financial need, but rather also on merit, academic promise and community service.
Eligibility
A scholarship award(s) will be presented annually. An applicant MUST already be enrolled at or accepted to an accredited post-secondary institution.
Disbursements
Initially, one scholarship will be awarded. Although as the fund grows, more awards at larger amounts will be considered.
Guidelines
Applications requesting scholarship funds must be submitted to Good Samaritan Foundation Scholarship Committee by April 1. Applications are available in Surgical Services, Human Resources, and in the Foundation Office at Good Samaritan, or on-line at www.gsrmc.com.
Scholarship Criteria
- Associates (full and part-time) are eligible to apply for the scholarship, if they have been employed at Good Samaritan for at least one year.
- The associate must already be an enrolled student in an accredited post-secondary institution studying for a career in any nursing program as described above under purpose.
- The associate’s application must be accompanied by two references. It is preferred one reference be given by the associate’s GSRMC supervisor; the other by a designee of a group that the employee does community service work with (ie: American Cancer Society; United Cerebral Palsy; local fire company etc)
- A college transcript (if the associate has already completed some course work) must accompany application.
- Community members applying for this scholarship should follow the same guidelines as outlined above, also with appropriate references.
