Tests Requiring an Overnight Fast

A number of laboratory studies require a period of fasting before collection in order to ensure valid test results. These include, but may not be limited to, those listed below. Recommended times of fasting from food are provided.

  • Basic metabolic panel: 8 hours
  • Cholesterol, total or HDL: 12 hours
  • Comprehensive metabolic panel: 12 hours
  • Fasting blood sugar: 8 hours
  • Lipid panel: 12 hours
  • Triglycerides: 12 hours
