Patient Preparation Instructions
24-hour Urine Collections

A number of studies ordered by your physician are performed on urine specimens collected over a 24-hour period of time. The proper collection of these specimens requires that you:

  • Empty your bladder and discard all urine after waking on the day that you begin collection of your specimen.
  • Collect and save, in the container provided, all urine up to an including the first specimen collected on the following day.
  • Follow the preparation guidelines that are specific to the test ordered. These guidelines will be provided by the laboratory with the collection container.

Containers for 24-hour urine procedures can be obtained from the main laboratory along with instructions related to the specific test being performed.
