Outpatient Nutrition Counseling

570-621-4739

Who benefits from nutrition counseling?

Nutrition counseling, provided by a registered and licensed dietitian, provides motivation and support for those affected by:

  • Obesity
  • Weight Gain or Loss
  • Dysphagia
  • Food Allergies
  • Heart Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes - Type 1, Type 2, & Gestational
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Gastrointestinal Disorders
  • Osteoporosis
  • Renal Disease
  • Anemia
  • Metabolic Disorders
  • Cancer
  • Pregnancy
  • Those recovering from eating disorders (post treatment facilities)
  • Pediatric weight loss & failure to thrive

The goal of nutrition counseling is to modify diet and behavior to reduce medication use and complications for a particular disorder or condition.

How do I get started?

If you are interested in nutrition counseling, ask your physician for a referral slip. A referral slip for nutrition counseling usually provides a diagnosis and diet orders. Calorie levels do not need to be specified. If the physician desires, the registered dietitian can determine the appropriate calorie level for you. Many insurances do cover nutrition counseling when ordered by a physician. Please check with your insurance carrier prior to your appointment to determine whether nutrition counseling is covered.

How does it work?

To effectively change something as personal as lifelong eating habits, consideration must be given to individualized diet counseling. In developing a personalized nutritional plan, many factors are considered including:

  • Physician prescribed diet order
  • Medications
  • Medical History
  • Meal Patterns
  • Eating Habits
  • Activity Level
  • Lifestyle
  • Individual goals for change
  • Need for additional resource materials

Group Weight Management Classes & Support Groups

Classes focus on permanent behavior change rather than quick weight loss.  Healthy foods, adequate caloric levels, record keeping, exercise, and lifelong weight management skills are emphasized.

Go to the Calendar of Events to find out when the next group weight management class will be held.
