Nuclear scanning tests use a special camera to take pictures of certain tissues in the body after a radioactive tracer (radionuclide or radioisotope) accumulates in the tissues to make them visible. Many types of tissues can be scanned including bones, organs like the heart, lung, gallbladder, stomach, thyroid, liver, spleen, and blood vessels. The radioactive tracer remains in the body temporarily before it is eliminated as waste. Nuclear medicine includes such procedures as nuclear stress tests, resting MUGA tests and bone scans. A Position Emission Tomography or PET Scan is a type of nuclear medicine test. Plus, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology are used together to provide the latest tests for metastatic cancer.
